Subu.S and Ashique.S Final year B.Sc Geology students of our college have won first prize in the state level. Inter Collegiate quiz competition at Fathima Matha National College on 29/10/99, organised as a prelude to National seminar, 9th Swadesi Science Congress and co-sponsored by S.T.E.C Govt of Kerala, CSIR. New Delhi, and all University of Kerala.

Our N.C.C cadets participated in Basic Leadership camp, National Integration camp, blood donation and AIDS awareness campaign Reji.R.Nair (u/o) Participated in Basic Leadership camp in Rajathan. SU/o.Jeevan.S attended the Army attachment camp at Madras Regiment. U/o Vinod.S attended the ‘Trekking Camp’ in New-Delhi.
N.S.S |
With the active involvement of N.S.S volunteers
and co-programme officers, our programme officer, Sri.T.K.Valsan, constructed
houses for SC/ST beneficiaries, assisted local authorities in renovating 40
houses, organised many trekking programmes, and organised one
Inter-Collegiate-Interstate cycle expedition covering over 1,100 KMs sponsored
by the Ministry of H.R.O. The unit assisted a handicapped volunteer to start a
telephone booth. In the year 2000-2001 the college got the prize for the best
N.S.S unit and best programme officer under Kerala University. Award was given
to the unit and programme officer for generating enthusiasm in implementing the
N.S.S programmes and promoting an active spirit of volunteerism among
students.
Sports and
games |
The college volley-ball team had been the winners
of the Kerala University Inter-collegiate volley-ball championship for several
years. The college Kabadi team also had been the winners of the Kerala
university collegiate kabadi championship for several years. There had been
several good team performances in events like chess, soft ball, cricket, and
kho-kho. The College football team had a great run in the inter collegiate
football tournament. Our team entered in semi-finals. The team also participated
in the George Joseph memorial All Kerala Foot ball tournament organised by T.K.M
Engineering college, Kollam. Our Badminton team also reached in semi final of
the inter-collegiate badminton championship.
Our students are very actively
participating in creative competition like painting story writing poetry writing
recitation, debating and dance items like Kuchupudi, BharatNatyam, Mohiniyattam,
Group dance, Thiruvathirakkalki etc.
They are very good in music also. Music being the supreme art of all arts instelled peace and highlights the need for love and calmness in the restless world. Our institution holds students who excel in the same. Our college has set up a music club to promote the culture of music.
Library |
The library started in the year 1964, with a
minimum number of books. Now the library is having a total collection of 35,000
books. It subscribes 40 periodicals and 7 news papers. A good number of journals
are subscribed for P.G. Departmental libraries for Economics, Physics and
Chemistry.
The booth are classified and catalogued as per C.C.C according to
colon classification.
Library man power consists of one II grade librarian,
one IV grade librarian two trained library professionals and five library
assistants. The library in house operation like classification and cataloguing
are handled by II and IV grade librarian.
We have constituted a library-club
for the promotion of reading among students. As knowledge enriches life and the
spirit of enquiry widens the horizon of knowledge, we encourage our students so
read more and more.
The library is now having spacious reading room,
reference section, and circulation sections.
General library and the
Departmental libraries function from 9-15 am to 3.15 pm every day.
The
Departmental libraries are under the charge of Head of the
Departments.
R.Sankar Memorial Computer Lab
Recently Varkala
Radhakrishanan M.P, who represents the Lokasabha constituency in which our
college is situated, had contributed Rs.10 lakhs from M.P fund to our college.
This money will be utilised for setting up a most modern computer lab. The lab
will be a memorial to our founder manager, Sr.R.Sankar.
Parent
Teacher Association |
The P.T.A in our college functions as an integral
part of all of our activities for the benefit of students. It stems from the
initiative of the parents, so as to fulfil their aspirations for their lads. We,
the management and the faculty of our college consider this initiative from the
parents as an integral part of our endeavours to fulfil the aims andobjectives
of our college.
It plays an important role in the developmental activities of
the college. The P.T.A encourages the Rank holders in various University
examination by giving them cash awards.
A Computer Lab has been donated to
the Physics Department by the P.T.A.
For the conducting of Terminal
examination P.T.A provide help by extending financial assistance for the
printing of question papers and answer-sheets.
Drinking water availability is
one of the main problem of our college. P.T.A had taken necessary steps for the
solution of this problem by providing a water filter.
It also provided
intercom facilities in various departments.
In academic as well as in
co-curricular activities like sports and games, art etc the P.T.A is a great
help by giving financial assistance for the deserving students. All our
laboratories were equipped with generous contribution from P.T.A.
Group
tutorial Supervision
As education is a co-operative endeavour between the
teacher and the taught, closer contact between the Teacher and the taught is
essential to realise this aim. A group of about 25 students assigned to a staff
member, who will be the tutor in charge of the group. Each student will keep
himself to touch with his/her tutor by meeting him as often as possible. A
student can approach his/her tutor for financial as well as emotional
problems.
Application for leave, concession form etc will be considered only
by the recommendation of the concerned group tutor. No conduct certificate will
be issued to a student except on the recommendation of the Tutor.
Student aid
fund
In order to help poor students, a student aid fund will be raised every
year by the students and staff and with the help of other agencies. Every
student is to contribute Re.1/- annually to this fund and there is an annual
grant from the U.G.C. A committee consisting of 5 senior members of staff
nominated by the Principal will scrutinise the application from the students of
the college and select the deserving ones for whom the aid will be
utilised.
Garden |
A garden evokes mental and emotional satisfaction
and a sense of aesthetic pleasure to any lover of nature. It implies us to live
close to the heart of nature. Our college has a wonderful garden in about 30
cents, with multi coloured flowers and plants. The flowers like Lotus, Jasmine,
Sunflower, Alamanda, Hibiscus, different varieties of Dracaena, Rose in
different colours, bougainvilla, Bignonia, gardena, croton, mimosa, make our
garden wonderful and good smelling. It helps to keep alive a lively and
refreshing atmosphere in the campus.
Co-operative society
A co-operative
society is functioning in our college to fulfil the needs of stationary and
other items.
Canteen |
We have a good college canteen, from where the
students and teachers can enjoy delicious food at reasonable prices. It provides
both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food.
Conclusion
In short 38 years of
our college history marks slow, but steady progress in every aspect of our
facilities and activities. We hope that a better future will be awaiting us in
the coming days.
